As an enthusiastic (but lapsed) beer drinker, I was very excited to discover Taiwan Head Brewers — a craft beer company founded just last year by three Taiwanese guys who turned their homebrewing club into a bonafide beer label.
They are known for brewing with Taiwan’s first homegrown liquid yeast, flavoring with Taiwanese ingredients like jasmine and Oriental Beauty tea, and using packaging that’s gorgeously un-hipster.
People, this is what a Taiwanese beer should look like in 2016.
Like Kavalan before it, Taiwan Head Brewers is following the “Gandhi” path to market: First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win…a bunch of international awards, suckers.
At the 2015 International Beer Cup in Japan, Taiwan Head Brewers won in two categories: Bronze in the Best Experimental Beer category for the “Start of Autumn Tea Ale” and Silver in the Best American-Style Pale Ale category for the “Start of Summer American Pale Ale”.
They won again at the 2016 Asia Beer Cup: Gold in the Best Flavored Beer category for the “Cold Chocolate Stout”.
Beers from established Taiwan craft beer label, Le Ble D’Or, have also previously won in Japan.
The label’s Chinese name [啤酒頭] translates directly to “beer head” from the English name, Taiwan Head Brewers. The reason? They’re ambitious enough to say they want to be the leading beer brewer in Taiwan.
I hope they follow the path of Jing-A in Beijing, opening taprooms in the city where fans and tourists can mingle and enjoy the beer.
